October marks Dyslexia Awareness Month, and we’re embarking on a journey to transform how we teach reading—both in the classroom and at home.
As teachers, we've dedicated countless hours to understanding the intricate processes that occur in a child’s brain as they begin to decode words. The journey through the science of reading has equipped us with a robust knowledge base, yet the leap from theory to practice often feels like a high hurdle. But we are not alone in this.
Having navigated the challenges of the classroom for nearly a decade, I understand the constraints of time, resources, and energy all too well. Yet, as we step into October and Dyslexia Awareness Month, it's time to bridge the gap between our learning and our teaching practices—for every student's benefit.
The need for change is clear: as of the 2022 NAEP’s report, an alarming almost 70% of Kansas's 4th graders are reading below grade level. It's the same story nationwide. This stark statistic isn't just a number—it's a call to action. It demands a shift in how we approach teaching literacy. And change starts with each of us, one classroom as a time, learning and growing together.
Over the next 31 days, I'll be sharing daily posts filled with practical strategies and personal insights to help you implement what we’ve learned. From phonemic awareness to fluency, each day will offer new tools and encouragement to refine your teaching practice. Let’s use this month to make a tangible difference in our classrooms and in our students' lives.
We know the challenges, but we also know the immense rewards of seeing our students succeed. Join me in making this October a turning point, where we move from learning to doing, from knowledge to action.
Together, we can transform challenges into triumphs.
With encouragement and hope,
Sarah
